Africa Gets Smarter

Well how about that? Zimbabwe actually found an active brain cell and did something right!

Former US president Jimmy Carter and ex-UN secretary general Kofi Annan have been refused entry to Zimbabwe, forcing them to cancel their planned trip.  The pair have said their visa applications for the trip were turned down.

“We had to cancel our visit because the government made it very clear that it will not co-operate,” Mr Annan told a press conference in Johannesburg.

Mr Carter added: “Our purpose in coming here was never to be involved in the political issues that have been so controversial in the establishment of a new government in Zimbabwe, but only to help with the humanitarian issue and we will continue to do that.”

He went on to explain they had submitted their applications “several weeks ago”.

But Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Washington has since told them they would not be delivered “on time”.

The government of President Robert Mugabe “will not permit us to come in and will not cooperate,” Mr Carter said.

Annan said the delegation, which had been set to arrive in Zimbabwe this weekend, needed “no red carpet treatment” but only the government’s “permission to help the poor and the desperate.”

“However the refusal of the Zimbabwean government to facilitate our visit in any way has made it impossible for us to travel at this time,” Annan said.

The government denied that it barred the officials from entering, however, saying it instead asked them to postpone their visit.

Gee whiz, and after Dhimmi Carta went out of his way to support the Mugabe revolution back in the day. I guess that little worm has turned.

Whittle While You Work

Bill Whittle weighs in on today’s viral video.

Once again, the words straight from Obama’s own mouth ought to be a campaign killer. Once again, not one person with half an active brain cell and a cat’s lick of common sense and knowledge of what America is all about should be able to vote for this turkey. Not one.

But Bill says it better, as he always does:

The United States of America — five percent of the world’s population — leads the world economically, militarily, scientifically, and culturally — and by a spectacular margin. Any one of these achievements, taken alone, would be cause for enormous pride. To dominate as we do in all four arenas has no historical precedent. That we have achieved so much in so many areas is due — due entirely — to the structure of our society as outlined in the Constitution of the United States.

The entire purpose of the Constitution was to limit government. That limitation of powers is what has unlocked in America the vast human potential available in any population.

Barack Obama sees that limiting of government not as a lynchpin but rather as a fatal flaw: “…One of the, I think, the tragedies of the Civil Rights movement was because the Civil Rights movement became so court-focused, uh, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change. And in some ways we still suffer from that.”

There is no room for wiggle or misunderstanding here. This is not edited copy. There is nothing out of context; for the entire thing is context — the context of what Barack Obama believes. You and I do not have to guess at what he believes or try to interpret what he believes. He says what he believes.

We have, in our storied history, elected Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives and moderates. We have fought, and will continue to fight, pitched battles about how best to govern this nation. But we have never, ever in our 232-year history, elected a president who so completely and openly opposed the idea of limited government, the absolute cornerstone of makes the United States of America unique and exceptional.

If this does not frighten you — regardless of your political affiliation — then you deserve what this man will deliver with both houses of Congress, a filibuster-proof Senate, and, to quote Senator Obama again, “a righteous wind at our backs.”

That a man so clear in his understanding of the Constitution, and so opposed to the basic tenets it provides against tyranny and the abuse of power, can run for president of the United States is shameful enough.

We’re just getting started.

the vast fathomless nullity

I think that part of William F. Buckley’s mantle has fallen on Mark Steyn. It’s not that he challenges you to expand your vocabulary quite like Mr. Buckley did. (though I do find myself learning a bit of French by reading him) it’s his deft turn of phrase, his mastery of the English language, his ability to craft a put-down or insult without using vulgarity. I’ve yet to read, or hear the F-bomb from Mr. Steyn.

What a phrase to craft describing B. Hussein Obama. Both the metrosexual man-child and his campaign.

From Mark Steyn’s Oct. 11th article:

Where was I? Oh, yeah. Citizen-presidents: Who needs ’em? The day after the debate I bumped into two Obama supporters in St Johnsbury, Vermont who said isn’t it great that he’s on course to win. Well, they were cute chicks, and I know an obvious pick-up line when I hear one, so I stopped to chat. God Almighty, it was like reverse Viagra: After ten minutes of Babes For Barack, I never want to meet a female woman of the opposite sex for the rest of my life. Their basic pitch was:

How do you solve a problem? Like, Obama!

How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

That’s John McCain’s problem. Traditionally, when an unknown politician emerges on the national scene, it’s a race to define him. Governor Palin is a good example: within days, the coastal sophisticates were mocking her as a chillbilly ditz with a womb that spits out inbred kids faster than the First National Bank of Welfare Swamp issues subprime mortgages. That’s politics as usual: Define your opponent. But Obama is defined by his indefinability. When I pointed out to my Vermont gals that he lives in a swank pad that was part of some shady real estate deal with a convicted fraudster (Tony Rezko), that he entrusted his daughters’ entire religious education to a neo-segregationist anti-American nut who preaches that the government created the AIDS virus to kill black people (Jeremiah Wright), that he attended fundraisers with a political patron who’s an unrepentant terrorist proud of plotting to blow up young ladies just like them at a dance at the Fort Dix military base (William Ayers), when I pointed all this out, they looked at me as if I’d brought a baseball bat to a croquet match. Mere earthbound politicians are defined by their real estate deals and sleazy buddies, but Obama is defined only by his vibe. As his many admirers in France would say, he has a certain je ne sais quoi. And, if you try to pin down quoi precisely, then they don’t want to sais.

See what I mean. Mr. Steyn makes me learn some French. But it gets better later on.

Gaze into the giant zero of the Obama logo, the hole in the star-spangled donut, the vast fathomless nullity that is the gaping keyhole to the door of utopia. To a sad shriveled Republican cynic, there’s nothing there but the wide open spaces of Obama’s blank resume. But a believer will see therein the healing of the planet and the receding of the oceans. The black hole of Obama will suck you in through the awesome power of its totally cool suckiness.

See what I mean? The word-picture he paints is almost poetic. Wish I could write like that. He’s a British expatriate. He must have some Celtic bards in his ancestry. Celtic bards were known to use satire as a well-honed weapon.

Change of subject. Could someone, like, maybe, Drew, add an ‘Obama’ category? Could be ‘Obama’, ‘Obamination’, ‘Obamessiah’, ‘Obawannacracker’, etc. Something. This man-child could be the next President. Let’s at least have a proper category to use until BMEWS is shutdown by the Department of ACORN.

A quarter of a century ago, in the era of the Labour manifesto that was dubbed (by a member of the Labour shadow cabinet) “the longest suicide note in history”, when one wanted to depict the absurdity of the view of the world advanced by Tony Benn and Michael Foot one simply had to say: “They want to nationalise the banks!” People fell about laughing.

Today, it is all considerably less funny. We are all socialists now.

For the Government to take stakes in our leading banks in order to re-capitalise them is not quite the sovietisation of Britain, but it is a pretty good start. Given the instinctively socialistic leanings of our Prime Minister, it may well have been a move he undertook calmly and, quite possibly, with a little excitement.

Perhaps the consequences of his not having socialised our financial system in this way could have been catastrophic - a view taken not just by his closest Cabinet colleagues but also by the main opposition parties. Equally, the consequences of his having done so could be catastrophic, too, because the socialist experiment rarely ends up with people feeling happier, richer and more free until it has ended.

Anyone over the age of 40 will recall the abiding result of the days when we had a socialist economy in this country: poverty.

Well, fine. Do you think it’s any different over here? In a million years, you’d never guess what our government wants to do with our banks. Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, Free Markets and Caveat Emptor:

US Treasury May Capitalize Banks by End of Month
The U.S. Treasury Department plans to start directly injecting capital in U.S. banks as soon as the end of October in exchange for passive investment stakes, according to a financial policy source familiar with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s thinking.

Under authority granted to it by last week’s $700 billion market rescue legislation, Treasury would get common or preferred shares from the banks it capitalizes, the source told Reuters Thursday. The government does not intend to seek board seats in the voluntary capitalization program.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said later Thursday that Paulson is “actively considering” capital injections into troubled U.S. banks.
“Secretary Paulson is looking at all the different tools to figure out which ones should be used at what time and how robustly and how much money to put into each,” she said.

Treasury’s plan to inject capital would follow action by the British government Wednesday in which it pledged billions of dollars to shore up banks’ capital in exchange for preference shares. The source familiar with Paulson’s thinking said Treasury was working “extremely fast” to put together a capital injection plan. The injections would get at the credit crisis by giving banks more capacity to lend, complementing the bailout bill’s objective of removing soured mortgage-backed assets weighing down banks’ balance sheets.

This will be the perfect opportunity for our new Socialist Overlord Messiah to come to power. Handed to him on a silver platter. Give it two years and we’ll be part of the North American Union. Then part of the One. World. Order. With one currency, just like fwance is already pushing for. And we’ll go to it eagerly. Because Change is Good!

Marianne Mikko, an Estonian centre-left MEP, is concerned that growing numbers of blogs are being used by individuals with “malicious intentions or hidden agendas”.

“The blogosphere has so far been a haven of good intentions and relatively honest dealing. However, with blogs becoming commonplace, less principled people will want to use them,” she said.

Mrs Mikko has proposed that bloggers should be required to identify themselves and that some popular blogs should come with a declaration of interests.

“We do not need to know the exact identity of bloggers. We need some credentials, a quality mark, a certain disclosure of who is writing and why. We need this to be able to trust and rely on the source,” she said.

Chris Heaton Harris, a British Conservative Euro MP, has rejected any moves to “regulate and restrict independent media sources”.

“Mrs Mikko obviously does not understand that blogs have become the life blood of a vibrant democracy,” he said.

(of course she doesn’t. look where the heck she’s from. she is used to having those above tell her how and what to think. comrade.)

“I hope these proposals are kicked out.”

Thursday’s vote in the European Parliament is not legally binding but is an indicator of growing EU concern over the influence of blogs on the internet.

A recent internal European Commission report, leaked three weeks ago, found that the EU was losing the battle for hearts and minds online.

“Blog activity remains overwhelmingly negative,” it said.

You simply can not trust the dirty gooks in North Korea to keep their promises. Ever. Period. Can’t anyone in DC accept the truth that this country is an ENEMY? Which means they will lie to us and cheat every chance they get? Duh!  Now let’s do the right thing: “accidentally” have all the ships sending them food and heating oil make a left turn at Albuquerque and send the cargo to Los Angeles. Tit for tat. Let them starve and freeze.

North Korea starting to rebuild nuclear reactors

South Korea says it has confirmed that North Korea started work to restore its nuclear facilities.  The Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that South Korea, the United States and other members of the six-party group of countries are working closely together to determine how to respond to the North Korean move.  Earlier Wednesday, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News agency reported that North Korea started putting its Yongbyon nuclear facility back together Tuesday, days after it halted disablement work.

North Korea claims the U.S. has not held up its end of a nuclear disarmament deal because it has not removed the North from a list of state sponsors of terrorism.

WASHINGTON — North Korea, after halting the disassembly of a key nuclear center, is now putting the facility back together in violation of the United States’ conditions for improved diplomatic relations between the countries, U.S. officials told FOX News on Tuesday.

The motive isn’t clear but sources say North Koreans likely are reassembling nuclear facilities at Yongbyon partly to protest the United States’ delay in taking the country off its list of terror-sponsoring nations.  “They’ve been threatening this move for some time,” one U.S. official told FOX News, adding that until now the threats were seen as merely a way for North Korean officials “to express their anger.”

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News agency also reported Wednesday North Korea has begun putting its Yongbyon facility back together, days after it halted disablement work. Even now, piecing the facility back together is seen as a “symbolic gesture” because so much already has been taken apart, though the United States is taking the developments seriously.

Another U.S. official told FOX News that North Korea’s intent might be “to put further pressure on us.” The cooling tower is gone but the reactor could be back in operation in two to three months, the official said.

Such An Accident

The owner of a news website that criticised the Kremlin was shot dead yesterday.  Magomed Yevloyev, who opposed the Russian-backed administration of Ingushetia, was detained by police when he landed at the region’s airport, according to colleagues.  A report from the Russian news agency Interfax said Mr Yevloyev, whose website has survived repeated official attempts to close it down, was shot by accident.

A source was quoted as saying that while officers were transferring him ‘to an interior ministry office, an incident occurred in which Mr Yevloyev received a gunshot wound to the temple area’.

Ingushetia is in the Russian North Caucasus and borders Chechnya and North Ossetia.

Accidentally got capped upside the head. Accidentally?? Yeah, and all the people opposed to Idi Amin accidentally died in bus crashes.

The authorities in the volatile province in southern Russia said Magomed Yevloyev was shot in the head accidentally while resisting arrest, the Paris-based non-governmental organization reported. 

According to The Associated Press, the site’s deputy editor Ruslan Khautiyev said that Yevloyev arrived in Ingushetia from Moscow on Sunday on the same plane as regional President Murat Zyazikov. He said the police blocked the jet on the runway after it landed in Ingushetia’s provincial capital, Magas, boarded the plane and took Yevloyev off.

Yevloyev was then whisked away in a car and later dumped at the side of a road with a gunshot wound to the head, he said.

Magomed ... Mohammed? Do we have a case of an islamic activist getting offed here? Or are the New Reds equal opportunity thugs?

An impoverished province with a largely Muslim population, Ingushetiya has suffered for almost a decade from unrest spilling over from neighboring Chechnya.

President Zyazikov’s administration is battling a low-level Islamist insurgency, who launch frequent attacks on Russian servicemen and law enforcement officials.  In response, Russia has launched a counterinsurgency campaign that has been criticized by human rights group for abuses such as arbitrary detentions and extra-judicial executions.

Over the years, Yevloyev had fiercely criticized Zyazikov. Last year, he accused Zyazikov on his Web site of hiring hit-men to kill him, Reporters Without Borders said.

I found a link to a page that tells a very, very different story: the arrest of this guy was carried out using a whole squadron of cops, and a street battle ensued between the cops and Yevloyev’s supporters.

“In a few minutes after the departure of president’s motorcade, another cavalcade of armored cars drove up to the plane – two UAZ cars and four Volgas. Armed to-the-teeth policemen poured out of the cars. Interior Minister Musa Medov was among them. Having seen Magomed Evloev, the policemen went for him to drag into the UAZ,” Khazbiev said.

It was the action-thriller then.

Relatives and friends of Evloev rushed to rescue him, breaking glass doors and pushing away airport guards, to no avail though. The police fired down a few bursts and escaped with Evloev by emergency route.

His body was dumped by the side of the road. Some accident.

The West must support Georgia and spell out costs of Vladimir Putin’s actions.

The most telling support for the beleaguered Georgian government has come from Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They, after all, have first-hand experience of living under the Russian boot.

Elsewhere, America has taken the lead in denouncing the annexation by Moscow of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. George W. Bush, who visited Tbilisi in 2005, said he was dispatching his Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, to the Georgian capital, and yesterday saw the landing of the first American military aircraft, carrying humanitarian aid.

Washington, along with Britain and France, had already cancelled joint military exercises with the Russians.

Meanwhile, the EU has, unconvincingly, taken on the role of mediator. At a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels yesterday, it expressed willingness to monitor the terms of the truce agreed by Nicolas Sarkozy, its current president.

However, Poland and the three Baltic states rightly condemned Mr Sarkozy’s intervention as failing to respect the territorial integrity of Georgia.

The West must now spell out the cost to Vladimir Putin of his revanchism in former “Soviet space”. The talks between the EU and Moscow on a new “strategic partnership” and meetings of the Nato-Russia Council should be put on hold. Russia should be expelled from the G8 and denied entry to the World Trade Organisation.

The first three steps would be a blow to the pride of a country that craves to be considered a great power again. The fourth could also have a long-term effect on a state that is still overwhelmingly dependent on oil and gas. Consider the boost that WTO membership has given to the more diversified Chinese economy.

To treat with impunity what has happened in Georgia will merely encourage Mr Putin to apply the screw elsewhere in the former Soviet empire. The most obvious target is Ukraine, which, like Georgia, aspires to join Nato.

The bone of contention could be the Russian Black Sea fleet’s base in Sevastopol, whose current lease expires in 2017.

Further north, Moscow might be tempted to intervene in Estonia and Latvia in the support of the Russian-speaking minority, and will certainly put further pressure on Lithuania to establish a visa-free corridor between the mainland and the maritime exclave of Kaliningrad.

To forestall further revanchism, the Russians should be left in no doubt that the consequence will be the freezing of their considerable assets in the West.

Diplomatic isolation and financial sequestration are the best means of curbing the sinister attempt to recreate their old sphere of influence.

That Didn’t Last Even 10 Days

Zimbabwe will drop 10 zeros from its hyper-inflated currency — turning 10 billion dollars into one — the country’s reserve bank said Wednesday. President Robert Mugabe threatened a state of emergency if businesses profiteer from the country’s economic and political unraveling.

Shop shelves are empty and there are chronic shortages of everything including medication, food, fuel, power and water. Eighty percent of the work force is unemployed and many who do have jobs don’t earn enough to pay for bus fare.

One third of Zimbabweans have become economic and political refugees. Another third is dependent on foreign food aid. But Mugabe barred non-governmental organizations from handing out food last month, claiming they were supporting the opposition.

On Wednesday, central bank governor Gideon Gono announced he was dropping 10 zeros from the currency, effective Friday. That comes a week after he introduced a 100 billion-dollar note which was not enough to buy a loaf of bread.

Mugabe went on television immediately after Gono’s announcement to warn against illegal money dealings and profiteering.

“Entrepreneurs across the board: Don’t drive us further,” he warned. “If you drive us even more we will impose emergency measures.”

Gono said new money would be launched Friday with 500-dollar bills. He also said he was reintroducing coins, which have been obsolete for years. Gono said the high rate of inflation was hampering the country’s computer systems. Inflation is officially running at 2.2 million percent in Zimbabwe but independent economists say it’s closer to 12.5 million percent. Computers, electronic calculators and automated teller machines at Zimbabwe’s banks cannot handle basic transactions in billions and trillions of dollars.

And now, the obligatory victim card:

Mugabe has blamed profiteering and sanctions by the United States and the European Union for Zimbabwe’s economic collapse. Critics have blamed mismanagement by Mugabe’s government and a land reform program that has slashed Zimbabwe’s agricultural output.  Both Mugabe and Gono are targeted by the sanctions, which impose travel bans and asset freezes on more than 170 people, companies and farms.

“The country is under illegal sanctions. These are intended to achieve regime change,” Mugabe charged. “We must strengthen our will and resistance so we can go through this time of difficulty.”
